Welcome to the new Alabama ACEP newsletter. I hope you enjoy it and that the information is interesting to each of you.

Our annual meeting and elections are coming soon (see Opportunities below). Our Board meeting will be on Sunday, June 8th at 5:00pm and the conference follows from Monday, June 9th until Thursday, June 12th. Dr. David Garvey has planned an excellent educational conference….this conference is easily as good as the courses at the National ACEP meeting….and we have the golf tournament, they don’t.

For the second year the conference will be a joint effort of the Alabama and Tennessee Chapters. Last year was quite a success for both chapters and we look forward to more of the same this year.

The statewide trauma system is taking shape with the first expansion outside Birmingham in the North Alabama region and the remainder of the state to follow over the next year. This will put Alabama on the forefront of trauma system operations in the world. Dr. John Campbell has completed a DVD demonstrating the skills taught in BTLS. This was sponsored in part by AL ACEP and dedicated to Dr. Campbell for the hard work over many years that he has done for BTLS (and Alabama ACEP), now known as ITLS. There are many more works in progress with which members of AL ACEP and its Board are involved. Look for more news in subsequent newsletters.

Our members and Board are working hard to deal with the many political and practice issues attendant to the practice of emergency medicine in Alabama. Through their collective efforts things are improving and it is an exciting time. Come join us and participate in shaping the future of emergency medicine in Alabama and the nation. We all look forward to more involvement from all Alabama emergency physicians and the Chapter welcomes each of you to the effort. I hope to see many of you in Destin on June 8th!

Chapter Update

ACEP Council Revises Fellowship Requirements
At the 2007 ACEP Council meeting, the fellowship requirements to attain “FACEP” status were revised. The Council added a new set of rules for those members who are not board certified in Emergency Medicine. The purpose was to honor those “legacy” emergency physicians who have made a long-lasting contribution to our specialty. And the new criteria reflect that. These new requirements for fellowship are more stringent, but they do allow fellowship for those who have demonstrated a long-lasting contribution to our specialty. Click here to read more…

Alabama EM Practice News

Prescription-monitoring Program Identifies Drug Abusers
The Alabama Department of Public Health has recently lauched a new tool to help combat abuse of controlled substances. The Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) allows emergency physicians to access a patient’s controlled-substance usage. Any controlled-substance prescription filled by a patient is entered into this database. For emergency physicians, this can be a very powerful tool to reduce prescription drug abuse in our state. Get Your State EMS Medical Control Number
All practicing emergency physicians in Alabama should obtain their state EMS medical control number. In order to get your number, please contact Hugh Hollon at the Office of EMS and Trauma. You can email him or call 334-206-5293. The Department of Public Health is currently developing an online application process, but it is currently not available.

State EMS Meeting Update
Electronic patient care reports are now fully operational for EMS with web-based reporting coming online next week. The EMS Division has inspected 95% of all services already this year. The North EMS region is now up and running in the statewide trauma system. The East and West regions will be completed in the coming months. Protocols for the trauma system as well as flight protocols for the air services have also been completed. The Southeast regional meeting will be in Panama City May 7-9. The Gulf region will have their meeting on the cruise ship “Carnival” out of Mobile on September 22 - October 2. The next State Emergency Medicine Control Committee (SEMCC) meeting will be June 3rd, place TBA. You can read the February EMS newsletter for more information.

PQRICOREHOP
Confused? It’s time to become unconfused, because these letters, which represent the major quality initiatives involving the ED today, have the potential to dramatically affect the future of emergency medicine.

The PQRI, core measures and hospital outpatient quality measures programs all have specific documentation requirements for emergency physicians which not only need to be understood but mastered. Take the time to learn the differences between the programs, and how to best take advantage of this opportunity both financially and by improving your value in the eyes of your hospital administration.

For an overview of the 3 major programs, you can read the PQRI white paper on the T-System website www.tsystem.com or for more detailed descriptions of the programs, visit www.jointcommission.org and www.cms.hhs.gov/pqri/

AAWEP Invaluable to Female Physicians
American Association of Women Emergency Physicians is a section of ACEP that all women in Emergency Medicine (EM) should consider joining. Despite numbers of women matriculating in U.S. medical school reaching 50%, the percent of female residents in EM programs remains around 30%, and only19% of Alabama ACEP members are women.

The objectives of the section are to promote leadership of women in EM, serve as mentors for women in EM, and to serve as activists for women in EM. Good role models and advice from experienced women in EM are hard to find. It is in this capacity that AAWEP is invaluable. If you have any thoughts on the need for this room, or any other expectations or needs from ACEP you have as a female member, please contact Hillary Hendricks or the staff liaison of AAWEP, Stephanie Wauson.

New Alabama Wilderness Medicine Group at UAB
The Department of Emergency Medicine at UAB is building a new, exciting program in Wilderness Medicine. The mission of this program is to bring health professionals – physicians, nurses, medics, and other allied health care providers – together to combine their passion for the outdoors with their medical profession.

Exciting electives for medical students, intense rotations for residents, research and teaching opportunities for everyone involved are just an example of the activities this new program will envelope.  In addition, we will search for opportunities for public education in preparation for outdoor activities and wilderness first aid.

There is no registration fee for members, but there are a limited number of registrations available, and we are already seeing an early surge in registrants. You can register for the conference on the ACEP web site at www.acep.org. Robert Harris, CAE, from The Nonprofit Center will be presenting a session on  “Thinking Strategically: Leadership Roles & Goals” Tuesday morning. These are just two of the many leadership sessions that are planned for this year’s conference.

States Enact Liability Reforms Specific to Emergency Care

Over the past few years, a number of ACEP chapters have worked to educate state policymakers about the unique challenges and substantial risks facing emergency care providers and the critical need to take action to preserve the emergency care system.  As a result of these efforts, several states have now enacted special liability protections for emergency physicians and on-call specialists.  This article details some of the strategies and tactics that four chapters employed in successfully lobbying for state liability reforms that are specific to emergency care.
